…follow the quiet nudges of your intuition.” — Ursula von Rydingsvard

“...I can doubt pieces before making them, but I have to jump into the unknown to get somewhere. I have to dare to make them.” — Paola Pivi

But most [photo] books will then use end text, or some form of additional context to answer those questions. To make the cause of the tension, or the roots of the intention, known.” — Jonathan Blaustein on Dec 21, 2018

I prefer the first one. I like the emphasis on the boat and shadow in the foreground (probably due to good placement of your wide-angle lens). I like the sun, the additional features in the sky, the lower angle, the texture and reflection of the ground, the depth of the features of the sky. The second photo is good but it is downbeat and flat in comparison. In the first photo, I like the sun flare but I would emphasize a little more so that the viewer knows it is intentional. Composition is good in both but they are very different.

Thanks for commenting. I like the sunflare in the first a lot, and the boat was more prominent as the subject, but I thought that its overlap with the bridge was a fatal flaw. Thanks for your thoughts.

  2. Robert says:

The first is more dramatic and intense, though I like the second as well.

  3. Debbie says:

I like both picturws but am more drawn to the top. Seems to have more detail, espesially in the sky. I like the bottom one , the way the boat is positioned and s3ems to be pointing toward the bridge. Just not enough going on in the sky to hold my attention and the sky take much of the image area in both. If you replaced the sky in the second one with something more interesting I would like that one bwtter for sure.

    • Rich says:

Debbie – Thanks for your comment. I guess the sunflare and the sky was important to folks because I would probably have played it safe and picked the second one where the boat did not overlap the bridge.

  4. Walter Levy says:

Yeah, first one for sure. Is it my imagination, or is the middle portion of the image, from the bridge to where the darker parts of the clouds appear, a different color? That section of the photo has a decidedly warm tone on my screen, while the rest of it looks neutral.
I agree about the overlap of the boat and bridge. I suspect that if you had taken the shot from a slightly higher vantage point so the prow of the boat was just below the bridge, and maybe slightly less of the foreground shadow, the resulting image would be 12.4% stronger.

    • Rich says:

I didn’t knowingly do anything to change the color — or add color back in after using the BW adjustment. I didn’t notice the overlap because the sun was blinding. Thanks for looking and commenting.
